FMVSS 1 : 135 – Light vehicle brake systems FMVSS 2 : 101 – Control and displays Description of the Safety Risk : The incorrect warning icon does not have a negative technical impact on the functionality of the vehicle, the driving operation and the driver. The warning icon “brake wear” is always accompanied by a warning message, which gives an additional information about the worn brake pads. This may impair the brake performance of the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury in a crash or emergency brake scenario. Description of the Cause : Due to an incorrect market-specific coding of instrument clusters for Puerto Rico, the brake wear symbol is not displayed as legally required on the subject vehicles. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : The brake wear warning icon is displayed with an ISO symbol as opposed to “BRAKE WEAR” symbol and the icon color is not red but yellow. The warning icon is always accompanied by a warning message, which gives an additional information about the worn brake pads. Involved Components : Component Name 1 : Instrument cluster software Component Description : NR Component Part Number : NR Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Porsche AG Address : NR Foreign States Country : Germany Chronology : In April 2023, Porsche identified that the coding for the “BRAKE WEAR” indicator was incorrect for some vehicles being produced specifically for Puerto Rico and implemented a change to correct the coding in production. Additional investigation was carried out to clearly identify affected vehicles in the field. Porsche was not aware of any customer complaints, warranty records, crashes, or injuries due to this issue. It was determined that vehicles with incorrect coding have been produced and delivered only in Puerto Rico. On May 10, 2023 determined a noncompliance with the applicable FMVSS No. 135 requirement and decided to conduct a noncompliance recall for the subject vehicles in Puerto Rico. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-347 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Correct software (coding) for the instrument cluster will be installed on the affected vehicles. The owner’s letter will not include a statement about customer reimbursement for pre-notification remedies as all of the affected vehicles are still covered under Porsche New Car Limited Warranty. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The remedy component is software which complies with the applicable FMVSS. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The corrected software coding was implemented in production in Calendar Week 13 (week starting April 27) of 2023.
