Chronology :
October 2021: Porsche became aware of an internal race track test drive incident in Thailand in a 992 with full bucket seat and side airbag deployment, which resulted in a spleen injury.
– June 2023: Porsche was informed about an accident in Germany in a 992 with full bucket seat and side airbag deployment also during an internal test drive, which also resulted in a spleen injury. Analysis was conducted in order to identify the circumstances of the crash and cause of the injury.
– July 2023: Porsche was informed about an accident in the field in Germany (from May 2023) involving a 992 with full bucket seat and side airbag deployment resulting in a spleen injury to a customer. A vehicle inspection was not possible.
– August 2023: Porsche was informed about a third internal incident in Germany with the described splenic injury in a 992 with full bucket seats and a side airbag deployment. This case was also analyzed in order to discover the circumstances of the crash and cause of the injury.
– Porsche’s analysis to date indicates that while the airbags meet all FMVSS requirements, the airbag control unit deployment strategy for the 992 equipped with full bucket seats may lead to spleen injury, in situations where a side airbag is not mandatory.
October 18, 2023 a determination of defect posing an unreasonable risk to safety was made.
