Summary
Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (Porsche
) is recalling certain 2022-2023 911 GT3 Touring vehicles. A software error in the rear spoiler control unit may allow both the vehicle and spoiler center high-mounted brake lights to activate simultaneously when the rear spoiler is manually deployed at speeds below 56 MPH (90 km/h). As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”
Remedy
Dealers will reprogram the rear spoiler control unit, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 24, 2023. Owners may contact Porsche customer service at 1-800-767-7243. Porsche
’s number for this recall is APA8.

APA8 – Re-Coding Rear Spoiler Control Unit (Stop Delivery / Recall Campaign)
Important:
CRITICAL WARNING -This campaign includes steps where control unit(s) in the vehicle will be programmed with the PIWIS Tester. The vehicle voltage must be maintained between 13.5 volts and 14.5 volts during this programming. Failure to maintain this voltage could result in damaged control unit(s). Damage caused by inadequate voltage during programming is not a warrantable defect. The technician must verify the actual vehicle voltage in the PIWIS Tester before starting the campaign and also document the actual voltage on the repair order.

Cause:
Due to a software error in the rear spoiler control unit, both auxiliary brake lights are activated under certain preconditions. This activation logic does not comply with legal requirements.
Action:
Re-code the rear spoiler control unit using the most current PIWIS Tester software release. Minimum requirement: Release 42.000.030

Chronology :
Early June 2023 – Porsche was informed that on the subject vehicles manufactured before Calendar Week 20, both CHMSLs are activated in tandem when the rear spoiler is manually deployed at speeds below 90 km/h.
Porsche reviewed the effect of the subject issue on compliance with FMVSS No. 108 and concurrently identified the number of potentially affected vehicles.
June 21, 2023 – Porsche determined that the subject issue was a noncompliance with FMVSS No. 108.
