Seat Mounted Air Bags may not Deploy

If the air bag inflator initiator fails to ignite, the side air bag will not deploy, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

 

Summary

Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (Porsche) is recalling certain model year 2017 718 Boxster, 718 Boxster S, 718 Cayman, 718 Cayman S, 911 Carrera, 911 Carrera S, 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, 911 Carrera 4S, 911 Turbo, 911 Turbo S, 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet, and 911 Turbo Cabriolet vehicles.

The seat mounted side air bag inflator initiator may fail to ignite during a crash.

 

Remedy

Porsche will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected air bag modules, free of charge.

The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule.

Subject: Front side airbag
Information: There is a possibility that front side airbags with incorrect detonator units were installed as a result of a supplier’s manufacturing error.

In the event of accidents in which the restraint systems are triggered, their full protective effect may be impaired as a result.

Remedial Action: Depending on which campaign scope is assigned to the respective vehicle, replace the front side airbag at the left, the front side airbag at the right or both front side airbags.

  • Scope 1 or 4: Replacing front side airbag at the left
  • Scope 2 or 5: Replacing front side airbag at the right
  • Scope 3 or 6: Replacing both front side airbags

Replace front side airbag

Overview:

 WARNING

Incorrect handling of airbag units

  • Triggering of airbag unit.
  • System faults can occur.

⇒ Switch off ignition and remove ignition key or remote control (hand-held transmitter).

⇒ A voltage supply (e.g. battery charger) must not be connected to the external power supply/jump-lead starting terminals.

⇒ Disconnect the battery and insulate the ground strap so that all contact with a ground carrier is avoided.

⇒ Wait 1 minute after disconnecting the battery.

⇒ Only pull off connector on the triggering unit after the waiting time has elapsed.

⇒ Make sure that no foreign objects are located in front of the airbag unit during installation.

⇒ Replace damaged parts during removal.

⇒ Always position airbag units so that the blow-out opening is facing upwards, e.g. crest on driver’s airbag.

⇒ Do not position anything on the airbag units.

⇒ If removed for an extended period, the airbag units must be stored in a safe place.

Airbag units must not come into contact with grease, oil, detergents, liquids, or similar substances.

⇒ Do not expose airbag units to temperatures above 194° F (90° C).

⇒ Do not remove the short-circuit spring on the plug-in contacts.

⇒ Ignition and preparations may only be carried out by skilled staff, supervised by a second responsible person.

⇒ Before disposal, the airbag unit must be rendered harmless by electrical ignition performed in accordance with all precautionary measures, thereby preventing it from being used incorrectly.

 

Work Procedure:

1. Disconnect the battery  Workshop Manual ‘2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery

2. Depending on which campaign scope is assigned to the respective vehicle, carry out:

  • Scope 1 or 4: Replacing front side airbag at the left
  • Scope 2 or 5: Replacing front side airbag at the right
  • Scope 3 or 6: Replacing both front side airbags

Information

Replaced airbag units must be retained by the Porsche dealership and must not be handed over to the customer (the customer has no right to keep them).

Replaced airbag units must be returned to the Porsche in the original packaging used for shipping the spare part due to possible recourse claims (against the parts manufacturer or supplier). Make sure that the original packaging is not damaged when unpacking the spare part so that it can be re-used for returning the removed parts.

3. Connect the batteryWorkshop Manual ‘2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery.

4. Replace the front side airbag and enter the campaign in the Warranty and Maintenance booklet.
