A rearview camera display that does not function as designed can reduce the driver’s view of what is behind the car, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

Porsche Cars North America, Inc (Porsche) is recalling certain 2019 Cayenne and Cayenne S vehicles. A software failure may cause the rearview camera image display to be delayed in responding. As such these vehicles fail to comply to Federal Motor Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, “Rearview Mirrors.”

 

Remedy

Porsche will notify owners, and dealers will update the related software, free of charge. The recall began April 19, 2019. Owners may contact Porsche customer service at 1-800-767-7243. Porsche’s number for this recall is AKA0.

AKA0 – Re-programming Instrument Cluster and Various Other Control Units (Stop Delivery/Recall Campaign)

Important: CRITICAL WARNING – This campaign includes steps where control unit(s) in the vehicle will be programmed with the PIWIS Tester. The vehicle voltage must be maintained between 13.5 volts and 14.5 volts during this programming. Failure to maintain this voltage could result in damaged control unit(s). Damage caused by inadequate voltage during programming is not a warrantable defect. The technician must verify the actual vehicle voltage in the PIWIS Tester before starting the campaign and also document the actual voltage on the repair order.
Model Year: As of 2018 up to 2019
Model Line: Cayenne (9YA)
Subject: Instrument cluster and various other control units
Information: Due to an allocation error in the instrument cluster software, there is no link between the brake-pad wear indicator and general brake warning light on the affected vehicles.

As a result, only the yellow warning message “Brake pad worn”, which can be acknowledged, will be displayed in the multi-function display on the instrument cluster when a brake pad is worn. There is no additional continuous warning using the red brake warning light.

In order to ensure that the required warning light will be activated when the wear limit of a brake pad is reached, the instrument cluster must be re-programmed with updated software.

The software of other control units will also be updated at the same time.*

This software update contains improvements, for example, for the

  • Infotainment and Navigation
  • Driver assistance
  • Chassis control

systems and also includes enhanced Porsche Connect functions.*

Subject: Porsche Safety Recall AKAO – Re-programming instrument cluster 2019 Model Year Porsche Cayenne and Cayenne S Vehicles

 

Dear Mr.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Porsche has decided that certain 2019 Model Year Porsche Cayenne and Cayenne S vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 1 1 1, “Rearview Mirrors.” Our records show that you are the owner of a vehicle affected by this action.

What is the issue? Due to a software issue, the rearview image on the dashboard touch display may be delayed when the vehicle is first shifted into Reverse. A rearview camera display that does not function as designed can reduce the driver’s view of what is behind the car, increasing the risk of a crash.
What will we do? Porsche will remedy this issue by having dealers re-program the affected software for free to prevent this issue from recurring.
What should you do? Please always carefully check your surroundings and wait for the rearview image to display before reversing. Please make contact with your authorized Porsche dealership to schedule a remedy appointment, and to arrange in advance for a Porsche loaner vehicle should you require alternate transportation during the repair period. Re-programming is expected to take approximately one hour to complete.
Lease vehicles and address changes If you are the lessor and registered owner of the vehicle identified in this action, the law requires you to forward this letter promptly via first-class mail to the lessee. If you have changed your address or sold the vehicle, please fill out the enclosed prepaid Owner Reply Card and mail it to us so we can update our records.
Reimbursement This recall will be carried out at no expense to the customer.

Pass Thru - Check ECU

Pass Thru - ECU Check verifies the vehicle compliance with the latest air polution restrictions of the following organisations:

- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
- California Air Resources Board (CARB).

 

Pass Thru - Check ECU checks the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) stored in the vehicles Digital Motor Electronic (ECU) against the PAG database.

Pass Thru - Check ECU is free of charge and does not require any login.

 

How to perform a Pass Thru - ECU Check:

  • Enter the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
  • In case of EPA offical enter the CVN ID.
  • In case of CARB offical enter the Cal ID.
  • Click the "CHECK ECU Version" button.

If the VIN is valid you see:

VIN IS VALID - User has the latest Update

 

How to find the VIN:

The VIN is labeled inside the windscreen at the bottom right side: see sample.

 

How to get the CVN ID / Cal ID:

CVN / Cal IDs can be retrieved with a generic scan tool device.
